Kris Greenwood takes us through the year that was - 2009

With the end of 2009 upon us, I can’t help reflecting on this past tumultuous year, and if you are reading this then you too have managed to survive it! Looking back, there are some major events that have happened through the year and the hardy have survived while the smart have flourished! Contingency plans have never before proved themselves so critical during the GFC and smart management, in some cases combined with a little luck, has shown us all who the leaders are in their field. We have all been focused on the financial crisis, and we have all been passing opinion on climate change, but what about those other worldwide significant events that have rocked the world?

NABERS releases rating tool for Shopping Centres

The NABERS Retail rating tool, which was launched on 1st December, will provide a standard, national, performance-based environmental rating framework for existing shopping centres. NABERS Retail is initially voluntary, applying only to the base building (not tenancies) of centres with gross lettable area retail (GLAR) of 15,000m2 or greater. We estimate the scheme will cover, nationally, around 340 centres and over 12.3 million square metres of GLAR with around 80% of these being in NSW, Victoria and Queensland. Despite its initial voluntary application, however, the Commonwealth Government’s National Strategy on Energy Efficiency highlights that NABERS Retail regulation is under active consideration. ‘Mandatory disclosure’ regulation for office buildings commences in 2010 and a similar mandatory disclosure scheme will be investigated for shopping centres in 2012. This would mean that a valid NABERS rating (and potentially other information) would need to be disclosed as part of any sale or lease documentation or advertisement and civil and criminal penalties could apply for non-compliance.

Merry Christmas and a happy, safe and prosperous New Year

As the Holiday Season is upon us, we find ourselves reflecting on the past year and on those who have helped to shape our business in a most significant way. We value our relationship with all our clients, business partners and readers and look forward to working with you in the year to come. Continuing on the tradition of previous years, instead of sending Christmas Cards a donation is made to a charity. This year we will be donating $250 each to Challenge - Kids with Cancer and Anglicare - I Care program.
